What Does The BMW P1396 Code Mean?

Engine started, battery voltage must be at least 11.5v, all electrical components must be off, parking brake must be engaged (to keep daytime driving lights off), automatic transmission selector must be in park and the ground between the engine and the chassis must be well connected.

The DME detected the CMP sensor signal was implausible. Engine speed is greater than 500rpm, and the fault is tolerable as long as there are no misfired occurring at the same time.

What Are The Potential Causes Of The BMW P1396 Code?

  • CMP sensor circuit is open or shorted to ground
  • CMP sensor circuit is shorted to power
  • CMP sensor ground (return) circuit is open
  • CMP sensor installation incorrect (Hall-effect type)
  • CMP sensor is damaged or CMP sensor shielding damaged
